Purify your intention for Allah's sake, make sincere repentance, seek forgiveness from those you have wronged, settle debts, write a will, and increase voluntary worship and دعاء memorization.
The most essential spiritual preparation is purifying your intention (niyyah). الحج must be performed solely for the sake of Allah — not for social prestige, the title of 'Hajji,' or any worldly purpose. Reflect deeply on why you are going and renew your intention regularly. النبي (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said: 'Actions are judged by intentions, and every person will get what they intended.'
Make sincere repentance (tawbah) before departure. This means recognizing your sins, feeling genuine remorse, resolving not to return to them, and seeking forgiveness from Allah. Equally important is seeking forgiveness from any person you have wronged — return anything owed, mend broken relationships, and settle disputes. Settle all financial debts and write a will, as the journey carries inherent risks.
In the months before الحج, increase your voluntary worship: pray extra الصلوات (nawafil), fast voluntary days, give charity, read القرآن regularly, and make abundant dhikr (remembrance of Allah). Memorize the key الأدعية for each stage of الحج — the talbiyah, الطواف الأدعية, عرفة الأدعية, and general الحج الصلوات. Study the spiritual أهمية behind each ritual to deepen your experience. Approach الحج as a journey of transformation, not just a checklist of rituals to complete.
