Women wear any modest clothing for الإحرام in any color — no specific garment required. They should not wear niqab or gloves but may drape fabric over the face. Choose lightweight, breathable fabrics for the الحرارة.
One of the most common misconceptions about الإحرام is that women must wear a specific garment or color. This is incorrect — women may wear any modest clothing they choose for الإحرام. The الإحرام of a woman is in her face and hands (meaning she should not cover them with fitted coverings like niqab and gloves), not in wearing specific garments. Her regular modest clothing serves as her الإحرام attire.
There is no requirement to wear white — this is a rule for men only. Women frequently wear: loose abayas in any color, comfortable salwar kameez, long skirts with loose tops, or any other modest outfit that covers the body except the face and hands. Light colors are practical in the extreme الحرارة as they reflect sunlight, but dark colors are equally valid. Many women prefer to avoid white simply because of potential transparency when wet from sweat.
Practical clothing tips for women: choose breathable, lightweight fabrics (cotton is excellent); bring multiple changes of clothing for the multi-day الحج; wear comfortable hijabs in breathable fabric (avoid heavy or tight wraps in the الحرارة); choose footwear with good support — women may wear any shoes including closed shoes and socks during الإحرام. Layering is useful as مسجد interiors can be cool from air conditioning while outdoor areas are extremely hot. Bring a light jacket or shawl for indoor worship areas.
