Baqi (Jannat al-Baqi)(جنة البقيع) The ancient Islamic cemetery in المدينة, directly adjacent to المسجد النبوي, where thousands of النبي's companions, family members, and early Muslims are buried. It is the most revered cemetery in Islam.
جنة البقيع
Jannat al-Baqi is the oldest and most significant Islamic cemetery. النبي Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) used to visit Baqi regularly, making دعاء for the deceased. He said: 'Peace be upon you, O inhabitants of the graves from among the believers and Muslims. Indeed, we will, Allah willing, join you.' Notable people buried here include: Uthman ibn Affan (the third Caliph), Fatimah bint Muhammad (النبي's daughter, عند some narrations), Hasan ibn Ali (النبي's grandson), Abbas ibn Abdul Muttalib (النبي's uncle), many of النبي's wives, and thousands of companions. The cemetery covers approximately 180,000 square meters. Visiting Baqi is a سنة when in المدينة and is typically included in الحج and العمرة visit programs. Visitors recite the دعاء النبي taught for visiting graves. The cemetery is open to male الزوار after certain الصلوات; women's visiting policies vary by time.
