| Etymology | From Arabic إتمام (itmam, 'completion/finishing') and السعي (as-السعي, 'the striving'). The root ت-م-م indicates bringing something to completion. |
السعي Completion(إتمام السعي) The proper conclusion of the السعي ritual, which occurs when the seventh lap ends at المروةh. After السعي, the الحاج proceeds to الحلق (shaving) or التقصير (trimming) to complete the rites.
إتمام السعي
Completing السعي correctly requires finishing all seven laps with the final lap ending at المروةh. If a الحاج is unsure about the count, they should assume the lower number and complete additional laps to reach seven. Upon reaching المروةh for the seventh time, the الحاج may make دعاء but there is no specific prescribed الدعاء. For العمرة, the next step after السعي completion is الحلق or التقصير (shaving or trimming the hair), which marks the exit from الإحرام. For الحج Tamattu, the السعي may be performed after الطواف al-Ifadah. Scholars differ on whether الوضوء (ablution) is required for السعي — the majority view is that it is مستحب (مستحب) but not required, unlike الطواف. السعي can be paused for salah or rest and then resumed from where the الحاج stopped.
