الحج Tamattu is the most مستحب type: perform a complete العمرة first upon arrival, exit الإحرام, enjoy normal life, then enter الإحرام again for الحج on the 8th of ذو الحجة. The sequence: arrive at الميقات, الإحرام for العمرة, الطواف + السعي + الحلق, exit الإحرام, free period, الإحرام for الحج on 8th, then all الحج rituals. A sacrifice (هدي) is required.
At or before the الميقات, enter الإحرام with the intention for العمرة: 'Labbayk Allahumma Umratan.' This is the key distinction of Tamattu — you enter for العمرة first, NOT الحج. Begin the التلبية and proceed to مكة.
Perform a complete العمرة: stop التلبية upon reaching the Haram, perform الطواف (7 circuits with idtiba and raml for men), pray 2 ركعة, drink زمزم, perform السعي (7 laps), then الحلق or التقصير. After hair cutting, you exit الإحرام completely.
These are the most frequent errors pilgrims make during this stage of Hajj.

Between العمرة and the 8th of ذو الحجة, you are free from الإحرام. Wear normal clothing, use perfume, live normally. Use this time for worship at the Haram, voluntary الطواف, القرآن, and دعاء.
On the morning of the 8th of ذو الحجة, perform الغسل and enter الإحرام from your accommodation with the intention for الحج: 'Labbayk Allahumma Hajjan.' Begin the التلبية. Then proceed to منى.
Follow the standard الحج sequence: منى (8th), عرفة (9th), مزدلفة, stoning + sacrifice + shaving on 10th, الطواف al-Ifadah + السعي (separate from العمرة السعي), and stoning on 11th-13th. Because you are performing Tamattu, you MUST offer a sacrifice (هدي).
Before leaving مكة, perform الطواف al-Wida as the final act of your الحج. Your combined الحج Tamattu journey is complete — you have performed a full العمرة and a full الحج.
