شهاب الدين أبو الفضل أحمد بن علي بن حجر العسقلاني
Hafiz Ahmad ibn Ali ibn Hajar al-Asqalani (1372-1449 CE) was a Shafi'i hadith scholar based in Cairo who authored Fath al-Bari, the most celebrated commentary on صحيح البخاري. He also authored Bulugh al-Maram, a widely used compilation of legal hadith, and served as the chief judge of Egypt. His scholarly output is considered unmatched in the field of hadith sciences.
Ahmad ibn Ali ibn Hajar was born in Cairo in 1372 CE (773 AH) to a family originally from Asqalan (Ashkelon) in Palestine. Orphaned at age four, he was raised by guardians who recognized his exceptional intelligence and provided him with the best available education. He memorized القرآن by age nine and began pursuing hadith sciences with single-minded dedication, traveling to study under scholars across Egypt, the Levant, and the Hijaz.
Ibn Hajar's magnum opus, Fath al-Bari (The Victory of the Creator), is universally regarded as the greatest commentary ever written on صحيح البخاري — and by extension, one of the greatest works of Islamic scholarship in any field. He worked on it for approximately 25 years, producing a meticulous analysis that explains the chains of narration, reconciles apparently contradictory hadiths, derives legal and theological conclusions, and contextualizes each tradition within the broader framework of Islamic knowledge. Scholars have said: 'There is no migration after the Conquest (Fath), and there is no commentary after Fath al-Bari.'
Beyond Fath al-Bari, Ibn Hajar's scholarly output was enormous. His Bulugh al-Maram (Attainment of the Objective) compiled the hadiths used as evidence by jurists for legal rulings, organized by chapter, and remains one of the most widely studied legal hadith collections. His biographical dictionary of the Companions, Al-Isabah fi Tamyiz as-Sahabah, is the most comprehensive reference on النبي's companions ever produced. He served as the chief judge (qadi al-qudat) of Egypt and taught at numerous prestigious institutions in Cairo. He died in Cairo in 1449 CE (852 AH), leaving a legacy that remains the gold standard in hadith scholarship.
