The time of standing at عرفة extends from noon on the 9th until dawn of the 10th of ذو الحجة. If a الحاج arrives at عرفة after sunset but before dawn of the 10th, his الحج is valid. النبي (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said: 'الحج is عرفة. Whoever reaches عرفة on the night of Jam (مزدلفة) before dawn, has caught الحج' (سنن الترمذي 889, graded sahih by الألباني). However, standing at عرفة only during the night — without being present during any daytime hours — requires a فدية عند the majority.
