النبي (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said: 'When the iqamah for الصلاة is called, there is no الصلاة except the واجب الصلاة.'
If الطواف is interrupted for a valid reason — such as the iqamah for واجب الصلاة, a need to use the restroom, fatigue, or loss of الوضوء — the الحاج may resume from where they stopped عند جمهور العلماء. They do not need to restart the entire الطواف. If the break is for واجب الصلاة, resuming afterward is unanimously agreed upon. For other breaks, scholars differ on whether a long delay requires restarting.
Taking breaks during الطواف is جائز for valid reasons, and the الحاج generally may resume from where they stopped without restarting the entire الطواف. The most common scenario is when the iqamah (call to start) for an واجب الصلاة is announced during الطواف. In this case, all scholars agree that the الحاج should stop الطواف, join the congregational الصلاة, and then resume الطواف from where they left off. النبي (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said: 'When the الصلاة is about to begin, there is no الصلاة except the واجب one,' and this takes precedence over the voluntary continuation of الطواف circuits.
الشيخ ابن عثيمين ruled that breaks for genuine needs — such as using the restroom, drinking water, resting due to fatigue, or renewing الوضوء — are all valid reasons to pause الطواف, and the الحاج may resume from where they stopped. He noted that the continuity (muwalah) of الطواف, while مستحب, is not a strict condition (shart) for its validity in the stronger opinion. Therefore, a gap in الطواف does not invalidate the completed circuits.
الشيخ ابن باز similarly held that if a الحاج needs to take a break during الطواف for a legitimate reason, they may resume from the point of interruption. However, he مستحب not delaying unnecessarily, as completing الطواف continuously is from the السنة. Some scholars, particularly in the Maliki school, held that if the break is excessively long without a valid excuse, the الحاج should restart the الطواف. The practical advice for الحجاج is to resume promptly from where they stopped after addressing their need.

Scholars from different schools of Islamic jurisprudence offer varying perspectives on this matter.
Breaks for واجب الصلاة are permitted, and the الحاج resumes from where they stopped. For other breaks, the Hanafi school considers continuity مستحب but not a condition. Short breaks do not affect validity.
Al-Hidayah: continuity (muwalah) in الطواف is السنة, not a condition of validity.
The Maliki school requires continuity (muwalah) as a condition of الطواف's validity. If the break is long without a valid excuse, the الطواف should be restarted. Breaks for الصلاة are excepted by consensus.
Al-Mudawwanah: Imam Malik considered continuity a condition of الطواف, with exceptions for الصلاة and genuine necessity.
The Shafi'i school recommends continuity but does not make it a strict condition. Breaks for any valid reason are permitted, and the الحاج resumes from where they stopped.
Al-Majmu' by al-Nawawi: 'Continuity in الطواف is السنة. If broken, the الحاج resumes from where they stopped in the correct opinion.'
The Hanbali school holds that brief breaks do not affect الطواف. Long breaks without a valid excuse may require restarting عند one opinion, but the stronger opinion (held by ابن عثيمين) is that resuming is valid.
Al-Mughni by ابن قدامة: discusses both opinions on continuity in الطواف.
