How much hair should a woman cut to exit the state of الإحرام?

A woman fulfills the requirement of التقصير (hair shortening) by cutting approximately a fingertip's length from the ends of her hair. This is roughly one centimeter or the length of the tip of a finger from the end of each strand. She gathers her hair together and trims this amount from the tips. Shaving the head (الحلق) is not جائز for women — النبي (صلى الله عليه وسلم) prohibited women from shaving their heads and prescribed only التقصير for them.

الشيخ ابن باز stated that a woman should take from each braid or from the gathered ends of her hair about the length of a fingertip. If her hair is of varying lengths, she should cut from all of it, ensuring that some amount is taken from every part. This applies equally after العمرة and after الحج. The trimming can be done by the woman herself or by another woman.

الشيخ ابن عثيمين explained that a woman should gather all her hair to one side and cut the fingertip length from the ends. If her hair is braided or in multiple sections, she takes the same amount from each section. He also noted that some women make the mistake of cutting only one or two strands of hair, which does not fulfill the obligation. A noticeable trim from the entire length of the hair is required, even though the amount is small.
