What are the signs of dehidrasi during Haji?

Dehidrasi is the leading cause of medical emergencies during Haji, and recognizing the signs early can be lifesaving. In the extreme panas of Mekkah, your body can lose 1-2 liters of sweat per hour during physical activity, making it nearly impossible to keep up with fluid loss without deliberate effort. Early signs of mild dehidrasi include increased thirst, dry or sticky mouth, dark yellow urine, reduced urine output, headache, dizziness when standing up, fatigue, and dry skin. These are your body's first warnings to increase fluid intake immediately.

Moderate dehidrasi presents more alarming symptoms: very dark urine or urinating less than 3-4 times per day, rapid heartbeat, muscle cramps, sunken eyes, irritability, and a noticeable drop in energy. At this stage, water alone may not be sufficient — you need oral rehidrasi salts (ORS) to replace lost sodium, potassium, and other electrolytes. ORS sachets are available free of charge at most Saudi Red Crescent stations and health posts throughout the holy sites.

Severe dehidrasi is a medical darurat requiring immediate professional treatment. Warning signs include confusion or disorientation, inability to keep fluids down due to vomiting, no urine output for 8 or more hours, extremely rapid or weak pulse, fainting or loss of consciousness, seizures, and skin that stays tented when pinched. If you or a fellow jamaah haji shows these signs, call 997 (Saudi darurat services) or go directly to the nearest medical facility. Prevention is straightforward: drink at least 3-4 liters of water daily spread throughout the day, carry a water bottle at all times, eat water-rich fruits like watermelon and cucumber, and avoid prolonged sun exposure during peak hours.
