First Aid Basics for Haji Pilgrims

Every jamaah haji should carry a small personal medical kit in a waterproof bag. Essential items include: adhesive bandages (various sizes) and sterile gauze pads; antiseptic wipes and antibiotic ointment; blister prevention tape and blister bandages (Compeed or similar); paracetamol (acetaminophen) for pain and fever; ibuprofen for inflammation and pain (if tolerated); oral rehidrasi salt (ORS) packets (at least 5-10); anti-diarrheal medication (loperamide); antacid tablets; antihistamine for allergies; tweezers and small scissors; medical tape; hand sanitizer (60%+ alcohol); sunscreen SPF 50+; lip balm with SPF; thermometer; and all personal prescription medications. Keep the kit lightweight and accessible — not buried in your main luggage.

Minor cuts and scrapes: clean with antiseptic wipe, apply antibiotic ointment, cover with adhesive bandage, change dressing daily and watch for infection signs. Blisters: see the detailed foot care guide — small blisters should be covered without popping, large ones may be carefully drained. Muscle strains and joint pain: rest the affected area, apply ice if available, take ibuprofen for pain and swelling, gentle stretching after the acute pain subsides. Headache: common during Haji due to panas, dehidrasi, and fatigue — drink water first (dehidrasi is the most common cause), take paracetamol, rest in shade or air conditioning. Nosebleeds: sit upright and lean slightly forward, pinch the soft part of the nose firmly for 10-15 minutes, apply a cold cloth to the nose bridge. Insect bites and stings: clean the area, apply antihistamine cream, take oral antihistamine if swelling is significant, seek medical help for severe allergic reactions.

Seek professional medical help at a Haji medical station for: any wound that will not stop bleeding after 10 minutes of direct pressure; deep cuts that may need stitches; signs of infection (increasing redness, warmth, swelling, pus, red streaks, fever); suspected fractures or dislocations (severe pain, inability to move, visible deformity); chest pain, difficulty breathing, or severe allergic reaction; confusion, loss of consciousness, or seizures; severe abdominal pain, blood in vomit or stool; high fever (above 39C/102.2F) that does not respond to paracetamol; eye injuries or sudden vision changes; and any condition that worsens despite self-treatment. When in doubt, seek medical help — it is free at all Haji medical facilities.

As a jamaah haji, you may be the first to encounter someone in distress. Basic darurat response: check the scene is safe before approaching; check if the person is responsive — tap their shoulder and ask 'Are you okay?'; if unresponsive, call 997 or ask someone nearby to call; check for breathing — if not breathing normally, begin CPR if trained (30 chest compressions, 2 rescue breaths, repeat); if conscious and breathing, place in recovery position (on their side with head tilted back); for panas-related collapse, move to shade and cool with water; for choking, perform back blows and abdominal thrusts (Heimlich maneuver); stay with the person until medical help arrives; note the time and what happened — this information helps medical teams. Consider taking a basic first aid and CPR course before Haji — even a few hours of training can save a life.
