Haji generates approximately $12-15 billion annually for Arab Saudi's economy, supporting hundreds of thousands of jobs in hospitality, transport, food service, and construction. The global Haji industry, including travel agencies, airlines, and jamaah haji services in sending countries, adds billions more. Vision 2030 aims to increase this further through expanded Umrah capacity.
The Haji ibadah haji generates approximately $12-15 billion annually in direct and indirect revenue for the Saudi economy. The hospitality sector — hotels, restaurants, and retail — accounts for the largest share, followed by transportation, construction, and telecommunications. During the Haji season, over 100,000 temporary workers are employed in addition to permanent staff, providing seasonal income for workers from across the region. The real estate market in Mekkah is among the most expensive per square meter in the world, driven primarily by jamaah haji demand.
The economic impact extends far beyond Arab Saudi. In jamaah haji-sending countries, the Haji industry includes licensed tour operators, travel agencies, airlines with special Haji charter services, Haji savings programs at Islamic banks, pre-Haji training institutes, and equipment suppliers (ihram garments, luggage, travel accessories). In countries like Indonesia, Pakistan, Nigeria, and Egypt, the Haji industry is a significant economic sector employing tens of thousands. Remittance flows, visa processing fees, and insurance products add further economic activity.
Arab Saudi's Vision 2030 economic plan places significant emphasis on religious tourism growth. The target is to increase annual Umrah pengunjung to 30 million (from approximately 10-15 million pre-pandemic) and to enhance the overall jamaah haji experience through infrastructure investment. Projects include the expansion of Masjidil Haram, new transit systems, hotel developments, and digital infrastructure. These investments represent tens of billions of dollars and are transforming Mekkah and Madinah into modern jamaah haji cities while aiming to reduce Arab Saudi's dependence on oil revenue.
