What is the ruling on arriving at Arafah after sunset?

The time of standing at Arafah extends from noon on the 9th until dawn of the 10th of Dzulhijjah. If a jamaah haji arrives at Arafah after sunset but before dawn of the 10th, his Haji is valid. Nabi (shallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said: 'Haji is Arafah. Whoever reaches Arafah on the night of Jam (Muzdalifah) before dawn, has caught Haji' (Sunan al-Tirmidhi 889, graded sahih by al-Albani). However, standing at Arafah only during the night — without being present during any daytime hours — requires a fidyah according to the majority.
