What Is the Ruling?

Nabi (shallallahu alaihi wa sallam) himself bathed while in ihram, and Islam encourages cleanliness in all states.

Sheikh Ibn Baz similarly ruled that using soap that has no fragrance is fine during ihram, and he cautioned jamaah haji to ensure their soap, shampoo, and other products are genuinely unscented, as many commercial products contain perfume. He advised jamaah haji to prepare fragrance-free products before their journey. The key criterion is the absence of pleasant fragrance (tiib) — if the soap has a medicinal or neutral smell that is not considered perfume, it is permitted.

Regarding washing the hair, scholars advise the muhrim to wash gently and avoid vigorous rubbing or scrubbing that could cause hair to fall out, as removing hair is one of the ihram prohibitions. If hair falls out unintentionally during normal washing, there is no sin or penalty, as the prohibition applies to deliberate removal. Ibn Uthaymeen clarified that incidental hair loss during washing is pardoned.

Abdullah ibn Abbas and al-Miswar ibn Makhramah differed about whether the muhrim should wash his head. Ibn Abbas said: 'He may wash his head.' So Ibn Abbas sent me to Abu Ayyub al-Ansari, and I found him bathing between the two posts of the well, screened by a cloth. I greeted him and he asked who I was. I said: 'Abdullah ibn Hunayn, sent by Ibn Abbas to ask how the Messenger of Allah used to wash his head while in ihram.' Abu Ayyub placed his hand on the cloth and lowered it until his head was visible, then said to a man pouring water for him: 'Pour.' The man poured water on his head, and Abu Ayyub rubbed his head with his hands, moving them forward and backward, and said: 'This is how I saw Nabi (shallallahu alaihi wa sallam) do it.'

How Do Different Madhabs View This?

Scholars from different schools of Islamic jurisprudence offer varying perspectives on this matter.

Hanafi

Using unscented soap is boleh during ihram. The Hanafi school permits bathing and washing with non-fragrant substances. They caution against substances that might have hidden fragrance.

Al-Hidayah: the prohibition in ihram is on applying fragrance (tiib), not on cleaning substances.

Maliki

The Maliki school permits using unscented soap during ihram. They recommend gentle washing to avoid pulling out hair. Imam Malik was particularly cautious about scented products.

Al-Mudawwanah: Imam Malik permitted the muhrim to bathe and use unscented cleaning materials.

Shafi'i

Using unscented soap and washing products is boleh. The Shafi'i school permits bathing, swimming, and washing during ihram as long as no fragrance is used and hair is not deliberately pulled out.

Al-Majmu' by al-Nawawi: 'The muhrim may bathe, wash his head, and use unscented soap without any prohibition.'

Hanbali

Unscented soap is boleh during ihram. The Hanbali school permits bathing and washing with non-fragrant substances. Ibn Qudamah noted the permissibility of bathing in ihram based on the practice of the companions.
