Arab Saudi operates on a 220-volt, 60-hertz electrical system and primarily uses Type G power outlets — the three-rectangular-pin British standard plug. This is the same plug type used in the United Kingdom, Singapore, Malaysia, and several other countries. Pilgrims from these countries can use their devices without any adapter. However, jamaah haji from countries using different plug types will need a travel adapter. The United States and Canada use Type A and Type B plugs (two flat pins), Continental Europe uses Type C and Type F (two round pins), Australia uses Type I (angled flat pins), and India uses Type D (three round pins). Some newer hotels in Arab Saudi have installed universal outlets or USB charging ports that accommodate multiple plug types, but this is not universal and should not be relied upon.

A universal travel adapter that supports Type G outlets is the most practical solution for jamaah haji. Universal adapters with multiple plug configurations allow you to use the same adapter in any country, making them a worthwhile investment for frequent travelers. Look for adapters with built-in USB ports (USB-A and USB-C) that allow you to charge phones and tablets directly without plugging in a separate charger. This also saves luggage space. Avoid the cheapest adapters, as poor-quality units can overheat, damage devices, or fail to maintain a secure connection. Reputable brands include Ceptics, Epicka, TESSAN, and Anker. If you only need a Saudi-specific adapter, a simple Type G adapter plug is available at airports and electronics shops in Arab Saudi for approximately 10 to 20 SAR. However, purchasing before departure is sunnah to ensure you can charge devices immediately upon arrival.

Modern electronics are typically designed to handle a wide voltage range. Check the label on your charger or power supply — if it reads 'Input: 100-240V, 50-60Hz,' your device is compatible with Arab Saudi's 220V system and you only need a plug adapter, not a voltage converter. In your hotel room, power outlets are readily available, though rooms may have limited sockets — a multi-port USB charger or power strip with a Type G plug is extremely useful. At Masjidil Haram and Masjid Nabawi, some areas have power outlets along the walls and pillars, though they are heavily contested during busy periods. Do not count on charging at the masjid. During the Haji days at Mina and Arafah, power access in tents is limited and unreliable — this is where a fully charged power bank becomes essential. Some upgraded Haji camps offer charging stations, but competition for outlets is fierce. The most reliable strategy is to keep your power bank fully charged each night at your hotel and carry it throughout the day. A solar-powered charger can serve as darurat backup during extended outdoor periods at Arafah.
