During Hac, you will walk an estimated 50-80 kilometers over 5-6 days, on surfaces ranging from polished marble to rough asphalt to uneven gravel. Your feet are not merely a comfort issue — they are the primary means by which you perform every pillar of Hac. A haci with debilitating blisters or foot injuries cannot perform Tavaf, cannot complete Say, cannot walk to the Cemerat for stoning, and may not even reach Arafah. Every year, thousands of hacilar have their Hac experience significantly diminished by preventable foot problems. Investing time and attention in foot care before and during Hac is one of the smartest preparations you can make.
## Choosing the Right Footwear
For men in ihram, sandals that expose the ankle bone and the top of the foot are required. This is not the time for fashion — choose sandals with thick soles, arch support, and secure straps that prevent sliding. Sports sandals from brands specializing in outdoor footwear are ideal. Avoid flat rubber flip-flops, which provide no support and cause foot fatigue rapidly. Women have more flexibility and should choose closed-back shoes with cushioning, breathable material, and non-slip soles. For non-ihram days, a comfortable walking shoe with proven support is essential. Most importantly, whatever footwear you choose must be thoroughly broken in before departure — wear them on your training walks for at least 3-4 weeks.
## Pre-Hac Foot Conditioning
During your physical preparation period, inspect your feet after each long walk. Note any areas of redness or irritation — these are future blister sites. Address them by applying petroleum jelly or anti-chafing balm to those specific areas before walks. Toughen your feet gradually by walking on varied surfaces including concrete and tile, which simulate the Haram floors. Keep toenails trimmed short and straight to prevent ingrown nails, which become acutely painful during extended walking. If you have flat feet, high arches, bunions, or other structural issues, consult a podiatrist about orthotic inserts compatible with your Hac footwear.
## Blister Prevention During Hac
Once in Mekke, maintain a daily blister prevention routine. Before each day's activities, apply petroleum jelly or a specialized anti-friction product to all friction-prone areas: between toes, on heels, on the balls of your feet, and on any spots that showed irritation previously. If wearing socks (during non-ihram periods), choose moisture-wicking synthetic or merino wool socks — cotton socks retain moisture and dramatically increase blister risk. Apply adhesive moleskin or blister prevention tape to any area showing the first sign of a 'hot spot' (a warm, slightly painful area) — addressing hot spots early prevents blisters from forming. Carry a small blister kit in your day bag at all times.
## Treating Blisters When They Occur
Despite best efforts, blisters may still develop. Small blisters (under 1cm) should be left intact — the fluid inside is sterile and promotes healing. Cover with a blister plaster or bandage and continue walking if pain allows. Larger blisters may need draining: sterilize a needle with an antiseptic wipe, puncture the blister at the edge, gently press out the fluid, apply antiseptic ointment, and cover with a sterile blister bandage. Never remove the blister roof (the skin covering) as it protects the raw skin beneath. Change dressings daily and watch for signs of infection: increasing redness, warmth, pus, or red streaks extending from the blister. Infected blisters require medical attention.
## Daily Foot Care Routine
Establish a daily foot care ritual during Hac. Each evening, wash your feet thoroughly with soap and water, dry them completely (especially between toes — moisture breeds fungal infections), inspect every surface for hot spots or developing blisters, apply moisturizer to prevent cracking (cracked heels are painful and prone to infection), and elevate your feet above heart level for 15-20 minutes to reduce swelling. If your feet are particularly sore, a basin of cool water with added salt provides significant relief. Massage your arches and calves to relieve the accumulated tension from hours of walking. These 20 minutes of evening foot care can make the difference between a manageable next day and a miserable one.
## Special Considerations for Diabetic Pilgrims
Pilgrims with diabetes face elevated foot risks due to peripheral neuropathy (reduced sensation) and compromised circulation. They may not feel blisters or injuries forming, and their wounds heal slowly and are prone to infection. Diabetic hacilar should: check their feet twice daily rather than once, never walk barefoot even in their accommodation, avoid extreme temperature exposure on their feet, carry a comprehensive foot care kit, inform their group leader and companions about their condition, and seek medical attention for any foot wound no matter how minor. The consequences of a diabetic foot infection during Hac can be severe — prevention is not optional, it is essential.
