Umre has 4 steps: enter Ihram at the Miqat, perform 7 circuits of Tavaf around the Kabe, walk 7 laps of Say between Safa and Marwah, then shave or trim your hair to exit Ihram.
Umre consists of four essential steps performed in order:
**Step 1 — Ihram:** Before crossing the Miqat boundary, perform gusul (ritual bath), wear Ihram garments (for men: two white unsewn cloths; women: any modest clothing), make your intention (niyyah) for Umre in your heart, and begin reciting the Telbiye: 'Labbayk Allahumma labbayk, labbayka la sharika laka labbayk, innal-hamda wan-ni'mata laka wal-mulk, la sharika lak.' Continue reciting until you begin Tavaf.
**Step 2 — Tavaf:** Perform 7 complete counter-clockwise circuits around the Kabe, starting and ending at the Hacer-ul Esved (Hajar al-Aswad) corner. For men, it is Sunnah to expose the right shoulder (idtiba) and walk briskly (raml) during the first 3 circuits. Touch or point toward the Hacer-ul Esved at the start of each circuit. Between the Yamani corner and the Hacer-ul Esved, recite: 'Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanah wa fil-akhirati hasanah wa qina adhab an-nar.' After Tavaf, pray 2 rak'ahs behind Maqam Ibrahim if possible, and drink Zamzam water.
**Step 3 — Say:** Walk 7 laps between the hills of Safa and Marwah, starting from Safa and ending at Marwah. Each direction counts as one lap. Men should hasten their pace between the green markers. Make dua at each hilltop.
**Step 4 — Hair cutting:** Men shave their head (preferred) or trim. Women cut approximately a fingertip's length from the ends of their hair. This completes the Umre and you exit the state of Ihram.
