Medine Weather Guide — Climate and Seasonal Planning for Pilgrims

Medine, located approximately 340 kilometers north of Mekke in the Hejaz region, has a hot desert climate (BWh) similar to Mekke but with some notable differences. Unlike Mekke, which sits in a valley that traps heat, Medine is situated on a relatively open plain surrounded by lava fields (harrat) and date palm oases. This geographical difference means that while daytime temperatures are comparable, Medine experiences greater temperature swings between day and night. Winter nights in Medine can be genuinely cold, dropping to 8 to 12 degrees Celsius, requiring warm clothing — a contrast to Mekke's milder winters. Medine is also more prone to dust storms, particularly during the spring months of March and April, when strong winds can carry fine sand and reduce visibility. Rainfall is minimal, averaging about 60 millimeters annually, mostly concentrated in brief winter storms.

January and February are Medine's coolest months, with daytime highs of 22 to 27 degrees Celsius and nighttime lows of 8 to 12 degrees — warm clothing is needed for early morning Fajr namazs and late evening walks. March and April bring warming temperatures (28 to 35 degrees) but also the risk of dust storms and windy conditions. May and June see rapid heating, with temperatures reaching 40 to 44 degrees. July and August are the hottest months, with daytime highs of 43 to 47 degrees Celsius and overnight temperatures remaining above 28 degrees. September stays hot at 38 to 43 degrees. October through December see a gradual cooling trend, with November and December returning to pleasant daytime temperatures of 25 to 32 degrees. For hacilar visiting Medine alongside Hac 2026 (late May), expect hot conditions of 40 to 44 degrees, though generally a few degrees cooler than Mekke.

One weather phenomenon hacilar should be aware of in Medine is the occasional dust storm. These occur primarily in spring (March through May) when strong northerly or northwesterly winds pick up fine sand from the surrounding desert. Dust storms can reduce visibility significantly, irritate eyes and respiratory passages, and create uncomfortable conditions for outdoor activities. When a dust storm is forecast or visible on the horizon, hacilar should remain indoors, close windows, and wear a face covering if outside. Bringing a lightweight scarf or bandana that can be wrapped around the face is helpful. Those with respiratory conditions such as asthma should carry their medication at all times and consider wearing a face mask on windy days. The fine dust can also affect electronics — keeping phones and cameras in sealed bags during dusty conditions helps prevent damage.

Because Medine has greater temperature variation than Mekke, hacilar should pack with layering in mind. For summer visits, bring the same lightweight, breathable clothing sunnet for Mekke, plus a light long-sleeve cover for the heavily air-conditioned cami interior. For winter visits, pack a warm jacket, sweater, or fleece for early morning and evening hours. A scarf or shawl serves multiple purposes — warmth, dust protection, and modesty. Comfortable closed-toe walking shoes are more practical in Medine than sandals, as the city's wider streets mean more walking distance and the dust can make open shoes uncomfortable. Eye drops and lip balm are useful in Medine's dry climate. A quality pair of sunglasses helps with both sun glare and dust. During the expanded marble courtyard around Hz. Peygamber's Mosque, the marble surface can become scorching hot in summer and quite cold in winter, so plan your footwear accordingly.
