American حجاج apply for حج visas through licensed حج operators who coordinate with the Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia in Washington, D.C. Women under 45 traveling without a mahram must be part of an organized group. Biometric data is collected at the Saudi consular offices. حج visas are free of charge and issued specifically for the حج period.

The U.S. does not have a centralized حج authority. Private حج operators must be licensed by the Saudi Ministry of حج and registered as U.S. travel businesses. ISNA, ICNA, and major Islamic centers maintain lists of reputable operators. The American Society of Travel Advisors (ASTA) membership is a plus. Pilgrims should verify Saudi accreditation, check Better Business Bureau ratings, and read community reviews.
