Gender segregation is maintained in مسجد نماز areas but relaxed in most public spaces. حج rituals are performed in shared spaces with family groups.
Saudi Arabia's approach to gender segregation has evolved significantly under Vision 2030 reforms. Inside both Harams, designated نماز areas for women are clearly marked on upper floors and specific ground-level sections. The طواف area around the کعبۃ اللہ is shared space where men and women perform طواف together.
In public spaces, strict segregation has largely been relaxed. Shopping malls, markets, and public transport are mixed-gender. Hotels operate without segregation. However, physical contact between unrelated men and women remains socially unacceptable.
During حج rituals, men and women perform all rites in the same spaces. Family groups stay together throughout. Saudi Arabia now allows women over 45 to travel in organized groups without a mahram.
