The majority of scholars require وضو for valid طواف; the Hanafi school considers it واجب but not a strict condition. If وضو breaks mid-طواف, renew it and resume from where you stopped.
The majority of scholars from the Maliki, Shafi'i, and Hanbali schools hold that ritual purity (tahara) is a condition (shart) for the validity of طواف, meaning طواف performed without وضو is invalid and must be repeated. Their primary evidence is نبی کریم's statement that طواف is like نماز, and since نماز requires وضو, so does طواف. Additionally, نبی کریم (صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم) himself performed وضو before his طواف and instructed Aisha to do the same.
The Hanafi school takes a different position: they consider وضو for طواف to be واجب (wajib) but not a condition for validity. This means that if someone performs طواف without وضو, the طواف is technically valid but the person has committed a sin and must offer a penalty sacrifice (dam). This distinction can be relevant for حجاج who find themselves in difficult situations regarding maintaining وضو in massive crowds.
If your وضو breaks during طواف, according to the majority position, you should leave the Mataf, perform وضو at the nearest facility, and then resume your طواف from the circuit where your وضو broke — you do not need to restart from the beginning. Wudu facilities are available throughout the Haram complex. Given the extreme heat and physical exertion, carrying a small water bottle and making وضو before starting طواف is essential planning.
