What Does Haram (Prohibited Act) Mean in Detail?

Haram represents the most severe prohibition in the five-category Islamic legal framework. An act classified as Haram is one that Allah has explicitly حرام through definitive evidence in قرآن مجید or authentic Sunnah. The person who commits a Haram act while knowing it is prohibited bears sin. During حج, certain acts become Haram specifically due to the state of احرام (see احرام Restrictions), while others are always Haram but carry additional gravity during حج. The most severe is sexual intercourse before the first Tahallul, which according to all four schools invalidates the حج — the حاجی must complete the rites, perform حج again the following year, and offer a camel as Dam. Other Haram acts during حج include: hunting land animals within the Haram, cutting naturally growing vegetation in the Haram, fighting and quarreling (قرآن مجید states: 'no obscenity, no wickedness, and no quarreling during حج' — 2:197), and deliberately violating احرام restrictions without necessity. Note: Haram as a legal ruling (حرام) is linguistically related to but distinct from Haram meaning sacred sanctuary (حرم).
