Janabah is a state of major ritual impurity that requires غسل (complete body washing) for purification. It occurs through: sexual intercourse (even without ejaculation), ejaculation (whether during sleep or wakefulness), and menstruation or postpartum bleeding in women. While in a state of janabah, a Muslim may not: perform salah, perform طواف, touch a physical copy of قرآن مجید (according to the majority), or remain in a مسجد without necessity. However, dhikr (remembrance of Allah), دعا (دعا), and listening to قرآن are permitted. For حجاج during حج, maintaining awareness of janabah is important because طواف requires ritual purity. If water is genuinely unavailable or would cause harm, tayammum may substitute. The غسل for janabah involves the intention, washing the entire body including rinsing the mouth and nose, ensuring water reaches all parts of the body.
