طواف is the ritual of walking seven times counterclockwise around the کعبۃ اللہ, beginning and ending at the حجر اسود. It requires وضو, covering awrah, and keeping the کعبۃ اللہ on your left side. Types include طواف al-Qudum (arrival), طواف al-Ifadhah (حج طواف — a pillar), and طواف al-Wada (farewell).
طواف consists of seven complete circuits (ashwat) around the کعبۃ اللہ, performed counterclockwise with the کعبۃ اللہ on the حاجی's left side. Each circuit begins and ends at the حجر اسود (Hajar al-Aswad). To begin, face the حجر اسود, raise your right hand toward it, say 'Bismillahi wa Allahu Akbar,' and begin walking. During the first three circuits of طواف al-Qudum, men perform Raml — walking briskly with short, energetic steps — while women walk at their normal pace. Throughout all seven circuits, men perform Idtiba — exposing the right shoulder by tucking the top احرام sheet under the right arm. After completing seven circuits, perform two rak'ahs behind مقام ابراہیم, then drink زمزم water.
Several types of طواف are performed during حج and عمرہ, each with different rulings. طواف al-Qudum (Arrival طواف) is performed upon first arriving in مکہ مکرمہ — it is sunnah, not واجب. طواف al-عمرہ is the طواف performed as part of عمرہ — it is a pillar (rukn) of عمرہ and is واجب. طواف al-Ifadhah (also called طواف al-Ziyarah) is the حج طواف performed on the 10th of Dhul Hijjah or after — it is a pillar of حج and absolutely واجب. طواف al-Wada (Farewell طواف) is performed before leaving مکہ مکرمہ — it is واجب (wajib) جمہور علماء کے مطابق, with menstruating women exempted. طواف al-Nafl (voluntary طواف) can be performed at any time and is highly rewarded.
Valid طواف requires several conditions: ritual purity (وضو), covering of the awrah, performing the circuits inside مسجد الحرام (though not necessarily in the Mataf ground floor — upper levels and rooftop count), keeping the کعبۃ اللہ on the left, completing all seven circuits without excessive interruption, and starting from the حجر اسود. If وضو is broken during طواف, most scholars allow the حاجی to renew وضو and resume from where they left off. There are no واجب specific دعائیں for طواف except between the Yemeni Corner and the حجر اسود, where the sunnah دعا is: 'Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanatan wa fil-akhirati hasanatan wa qina adhaban-nar.' The rest of each circuit should be filled with personal دعا, dhikr, and قرآن recitation.
طواف is one of the oldest forms of worship on earth, tracing back to Ibrahim and potentially to Adam. The counterclockwise motion mirrors the rotation of celestial bodies — electrons around nuclei, moons around planets, planets around stars — aligning the حاجی with the fundamental patterns of creation. The repetition of seven circuits serves a contemplative purpose: as the initial excitement and distraction fade, a deeper state of presence emerges. Many حجاج report a meditative quality to طواف, particularly during off-peak hours when the Mataf is less crowded. The act of circling a single point declares with the body what the shahada declares with the tongue: that there is one center to existence, and that center is Allah.
