بئر عثمان / بئر رومة
Bir Uthman (also known as Bir Rumah) is a historic well in مدینہ منورہ purchased by Uthman ibn Affan (RA) after نبی کریم (PBUH) promised Paradise to whoever bought it and made it free for all Muslims. Originally owned by a man who charged for water, Uthman bought it and dedicated it as a waqf (endowment) for the public. The area is now part of a date palm garden.
When the Muslims first arrived in مدینہ منورہ, fresh water was scarce. A man named Rumah owned the best well and sold water at high prices. نبی کریم (PBUH) said: 'Whoever buys the well of Rumah and makes it free for Muslims, he will have Paradise.' Uthman ibn Affan (RA) negotiated to buy the well, eventually purchasing it entirely and dedicating it as a waqf. This is considered one of the earliest charitable endowments in Islam. The area around the well later became a date palm garden, and the endowment has been maintained for nearly 1,400 years.
Bir Uthman represents one of the most famous acts of charity in Islamic history. The well endowment has been running continuously for nearly 1,400 years, making it one of the oldest active waqf institutions in the world. It exemplifies the Islamic concept of sadaqah jariyah — charity that continues to benefit people long after the giver has passed.
Bir Uthman is located in the northern part of مدینہ منورہ, about 5 km from مسجد نبوی. The well itself is now part of a fenced agricultural area with date palms that are considered part of Uthman's ongoing waqf. The well can be viewed but is not open for drawing water. The site is a testament to the concept of sadaqah jariyah (ongoing charity) in Islam. It is not a standard ziyarah stop but holds great historical interest. Visit during daylight hours.
