Jabal Rahmah (Mount of Mercy) is a granite hill about 70 meters high on the Plain of عرفات. It is near where Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) stood during his Farewell حج. Some traditions hold it as the place where Adam and Hawwa (Eve) were reunited on Earth. Standing on عرفات is the most essential pillar of حج.
Jabal Rahmah has been a landmark on the Plain of عرفات for centuries. Islamic tradition holds that it is the place where Prophet Adam (AS) and Hawwa (AS) were reunited after being sent down to Earth. During the Farewell حج in 10 AH, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) stood near this mount while delivering his final sermon. A white pillar was erected at its summit as a marker. The hill is made of granite and rises about 70 meters above the plain.
Jabal Rahmah is a symbol of mercy and reunion. While the entire Plain of عرفات is the place of standing (wuquf), the mount holds emotional significance for حجاج. The Day of Arafah is considered the day when Allah forgives the most sins, and standing here in دعا is one of the most powerful moments in a Muslim's life.
Jabal Rahmah is accessible during the Day of Arafah but becomes extremely crowded. Climbing the hill is not required and not part of the حج rites. Standing anywhere within the boundaries of عرفات fulfills the wuquf requirement. The climb is steep and can be dangerous in crowds. Scholars advise that spending time in دعا on the plain is more beneficial than struggling to climb the hill. If you do visit, avoid the false practice of rubbing the rocks or tying cloth to the pillar.
