What is the ruling on arriving at عرفات after sunset?

The time of standing at عرفات extends from noon on the 9th until dawn of the 10th of Dhul Hijjah. If a حاجی arrives at عرفات after sunset but before dawn of the 10th, his حج is valid. نبی کریم (صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم) said: 'حج is عرفات. Whoever reaches عرفات on the night of Jam (مزدلفہ) before dawn, has caught حج' (Sunan al-Tirmidhi 889, graded sahih by al-Albani). However, standing at عرفات only during the night — without being present during any daytime hours — requires a fidyah according to the majority.
