| Etymology | Ifrad (إفراد) from the root ف-ر-د (f-r-d) means 'to single out,' 'to isolate,' or 'to do alone.' الحج Ifrad literally means 'the singled-out الحج' or 'the isolated الحج,' signifying that الحج is performed independently without the addition of العمرة. |
الحج Ifrad(حَجّ الإِفْرَاد) الحج Ifrad (single/isolated الحج) is a type of الحج where the الحاج performs الحج alone without combining it with العمرة. No واجب sacrifice is required, though voluntary sacrifice is مستحب.
حَجّ الإِفْرَاد
In الحج Ifrad, the الحاج enters الإحرام at the Miqat with the intention of الحج only, saying 'Labbayk Allahumma Hajjan' (Here I am, O Allah, for الحج). They remain in الإحرام and proceed to perform all the الحج rites: الطواف al-Qudum (upon arrival, السنة), standing at عرفة, staying at مزدلفة, stoning the الجمرات, Halq/Taqsir, الطواف al-Ifadah, السعي, and الطواف al-Wida. Since the الحاج is performing الحج in isolation without combining العمرة, no Hady (thanksgiving sacrifice) is required, though offering a voluntary sacrifice is مستحب. The Shafi'i and Hanbali schools consider Ifrad to be the simplest type of الحج. It is commonly performed by residents of مكة and those living within the Miqat boundaries, as they can perform العمرة separately at any time throughout the year. Some scholars, particularly from the Hanafi and Maliki schools, consider Ifrad to be the most virtuous type because the الحاج dedicates separate journeys to الحج and العمرة. However, other scholars favor Tamattu based on النبي's recommendation to his companions.
