While both হজ্জ and উমরাহ are হজ্জs to the Sacred Mosque (al-মসজিদুল হারাম) in মক্কা মুকাররমা involving তাওয়াফ and সাঈ, they differ significantly in their timing, scope, obligation, and spiritual weight. হজ্জ is the 'greater হজ্জ' and can only be performed during the specific days of Dhul Hijjah — the 8th through the 12th or 13th of the month. It involves a comprehensive set of rites spread across multiple locations: মক্কা মুকাররমা, মিনা, আরাফাত, and মুযদালিফা. উমরাহ, often called the 'lesser হজ্জ,' can be performed at any time throughout the year and consists of only four acts: entering ইহরাম, performing তাওয়াফ around the কাবা শরীফ, performing সাঈ between Safa and Marwah, and shaving or cutting the hair.
In terms of obligation, হজ্জ is unanimously considered one of the five pillars of Islam and is ওয়াজিব (fard) once in a lifetime for every able Muslim. উমরাহ's obligation is debated: the Shafi'i and Hanbali schools consider it ওয়াজিব once in a lifetime, while the Hanafi and Maliki schools consider it a strongly মুস্তাহাব Sunnah (sunnah mu'akkadah) but not ওয়াজিব. Both হজ্জs begin with entering the state of ইহরাম at the designated miqat points and share the rites of তাওয়াফ and সাঈ, but হজ্জ adds the critical rites of standing at আরাফাত, spending the night at মুযদালিফা, stoning the three pillars at মিনা, offering an animal sacrifice, and performing a farewell তাওয়াফ.
Practically, হজ্জ typically requires 5-6 days to complete all rites (some হাজীগণ stay longer), while উমরাহ can be completed in as little as 2-4 hours for the actual rituals, though most হাজীগণ spend several days in মক্কা মুকাররমা. হজ্জ is significantly more expensive (ranging from $5,000 to $15,000+ depending on the country of origin and package) due to the fixed timing creating high demand, while উমরাহ is more affordable and flexible. Both are deeply rewarding spiritual experiences, and নবী করীম (সাল্লাল্লাহু আলাইহি ওয়া সাল্লাম) said that 'উমরাহ to উমরাহ is an expiation for the sins between them, and an accepted হজ্জ has no reward but Paradise.'
