ih-RAHM
ইহরাম is the sacred state of ritual purity and consecration that a Muslim must enter before performing the হজ্জ or উমরাহ হজ্জ. It encompasses both a specific intention (niyyah) and the wearing of prescribed garments.
mal-AA-bis al-ih-RAAM
The specific clothing worn during the state of ইহরাম for হজ্জ or উমরাহ. For men, this consists of two white unstitched cloths (izar and rida). Women wear their regular modest clothing without specific garment requirements.
mah-THOO-raat al-ih-RAAM
ইহরাম restrictions are the specific prohibitions that apply to হাজীগণ while in the sacred state of ইহরাম during হজ্জ or উমরাহ. Violating these restrictions may necessitate a Fidyah (penalty) or Dam (sacrifice).
mah-DHU-raat al-ih-RAAM
The prohibited actions during the state of ইহরাম for হজ্জ or উমরাহ. Violations carry varying penalties depending on their severity, ranging from fidyah (minor expiation) to dam (animal sacrifice) to full kaffarah (major expiation).
tah-WAHF
তাওয়াফ is the ritual act of circumambulating the কাবা শরীফ seven times in a counterclockwise direction, beginning and ending at the line of the হাজরে আসওয়াদ. It is a fundamental component of both হজ্জ and উমরাহ.
tah-WAHF al-ih-FAH-dah
তাওয়াফ al-Ifadah (also known as তাওয়াফ al-Ziyarah) is the ওয়াজিব circumambulation of the কাবা শরীফ performed on or after the 10th of Dhul Hijjah. It is a fundamental pillar (rukn) of হজ্জ, without which the হজ্জ is invalid.
ta-WAAF al-qu-DOOM
তাওয়াফ al-Qudum (Arrival তাওয়াফ) is the circumambulation of the কাবা শরীফ performed as a greeting upon arriving in মক্কা মুকাররমা. It is a Sunnah for হজ্জ হাজীগণ (Ifrad and Qiran) but not required for Tamattu হাজীগণ who perform উমরাহ তাওয়াফ instead.
tah-WAHF al-wa-DAH
তাওয়াফ al-Wida (Farewell তাওয়াফ) is the final circumambulation of the কাবা শরীফ that হজ্জ হাজীগণ perform as their last act of worship before leaving মক্কা মুকাররমা. The majority of scholars consider it ওয়াজিব (wajib) for হজ্জ হাজীগণ.

Supplications made during the circumambulation of the কাবা শরীফ. While there are no mandatory prescribed duas for each specific circuit, certain দোয়াs are authentically narrated for specific locations during তাওয়াফ.

Saudi government-licensed organizations that serve as the official host bodies for international হজ্জ হাজীগণ, organized by nationality or geographic region. They manage accommodation, transport, guides, and services for their assigned হাজী groups.
tal-BEE-yah
The তালবিয়াহ is the sacred proclamation chanted by হাজীগণ during হজ্জ and উমরাহ, beginning at the miqat when ইহরাম is assumed. Its words declare the হাজী's joyful response to Allah's call.
MAA-naa at-tal-BEE-yah
The তালবিয়াহ is the devotional proclamation recited by হাজীগণ during হজ্জ and উমরাহ, declaring their response to Allah's call, affirming His oneness, and acknowledging that all praise, blessings, and sovereignty belong to Him alone.
MI-naa
মিনা is a valley near মক্কা মুকাররমা that transforms into the world's largest tent city during হজ্জ. It is the primary base for হাজীগণ during the days of হজ্জ, housing the জামারাত pillars and serving as the site for stoning, sacrifice, and overnight stays.
muz-DA-li-fah
মুযদালিফা is the open plain located between আরাফাত and মিনা where হজ্জ হাজীগণ spend the night after the Day of আরাফাত. Pilgrims combine their Maghrib and Isha সালাতs and collect pebbles for the stoning ritual.
SAH-ee
সাঈ is the ritual of walking back and forth seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwa in মসজিদুল হারাম, commemorating Hajar's search for water. It is a required pillar (rukn) of both হজ্জ and উমরাহ.
as-SA'-ee bin-ni-YAA-bah
The performance of সাঈ on behalf of another person who is unable to perform it themselves due to permanent physical incapacity, severe illness, or death. This is part of the broader framework of হজ্জ al-Badal (proxy হজ্জ).
it-MAAM as-SA'-ee
The proper conclusion of the সাঈ ritual, which occurs when the seventh lap ends at Marwah. After সাঈ, the হাজী proceeds to halq (shaving) or taqsir (trimming) to complete the rites.
it-ti-JAAH as-SA'-ee
The prescribed direction for performing সাঈ, which must begin from the hill of Safa toward Marwah and end the seventh lap at Marwah. This sequence follows নবী করীমic Sunnah and কুরআনic order.
as-SA'-ee a-la KUR-see mu-ta-HAR-rik
The practice of performing সাঈ between Safa and Marwah using a wheelchair, permitted for হাজীগণ who are unable to walk due to physical disability, illness, old age, or extreme fatigue.
HAJJ (with a breathy 'h')
হজ্জ is the annual Islamic হজ্জ to the Sacred House (কাবা শরীফ) in মক্কা মুকাররমা, performed during specific days of the month of Dhul Hijjah. It is the fifth pillar of Islam, ওয়াজিব once in a lifetime for every Muslim who has the physical health and financial means.

BAA-qat al-HAJJ
A comprehensive travel arrangement offered by licensed হজ্জ operators that bundles flights, accommodation, meals, ground transport, and ritual guidance for হাজীগণ performing হজ্জ.
tas-REEH al-HAJJ
The official authorization document required by Saudi Arabian authorities to perform হজ্জ. It is mandatory for both domestic and international হাজীগণ and is verified at security checkpoints around মক্কা মুকাররমা during the হজ্জ season.
HAJJ al-qi-RAAN
হজ্জ Qiran (combined হজ্জ) is a type of হজ্জ where the হাজী enters ইহরাম intending both উমরাহ and হজ্জ together. They remain in ইহরাম throughout and perform both rites with a single set of তাওয়াফ and সাঈ.
HIS-sat al-HAJJ
The annual limit on the number of হাজীগণ each country may send to হজ্জ, determined by the Saudi Ministry of হজ্জ and উমরাহ. The standard allocation is approximately 1,000 হাজীগণ per million Muslim citizens in each country.
HAJJ at-ta-MAT-too
হজ্জ Tamattu (enjoyment হজ্জ) is a type of হজ্জ where the হাজী performs উমরাহ first, exits ইহরাম, then enters ইহরাম again for হজ্জ during the same trip. It requires a thanksgiving sacrifice (Hady).
