হজ্জ Tamattu (উমরাহ + break + হজ্জ) is most মুস্তাহাব for visitors; Ifrad is হজ্জ-only with no sacrifice required; Qiran combines both in one continuous ইহরাম — most হাজীগণ today perform Tamattu.
The three types of হজ্জ differ in how উমরাহ and হজ্জ are combined: হজ্জ Tamattu involves performing a complete উমরাহ upon arrival in মক্কা মুকাররমা, exiting ইহরাম and enjoying normal activities, then entering ইহরাম again for হজ্জ on the 8th of Dhul Hijjah. This is the most মুস্তাহাব type for হাজীগণ coming from outside মক্কা মুকাররমা, as নবী করীম (সাল্লাল্লাহু আলাইহি ওয়া সাল্লাম) said: 'If I had known beforehand what I know now, I would not have brought a sacrificial animal and I would have made it an উমরাহ' (Bukhari). A sacrifice (hady) is required.
হজ্জ Ifrad means performing হজ্জ only, without উমরাহ. The হাজী enters ইহরাম with the intention for হজ্জ alone and remains in ইহরাম (or enters ইহরাম on the 8th if a মক্কা মুকাররমা resident). No sacrifice is required, though it is মুস্তাহাব. হজ্জ Qiran combines উমরাহ and হজ্জ in a single continuous ইহরাম — the হাজী enters ইহরাম intending both and does not exit ইহরাম between them. The rituals are essentially the same as Ifrad, but a sacrifice is required as with Tamattu. Qiran is less common today as it requires staying in ইহরাম for a longer period. The majority of scholars recommend Tamattu for non-residents of মক্কা মুকাররমা, and most হজ্জ operators structure their programs around it.
