Where should a person in Jeddah enter ইহরাম for উমরাহ?

Jeddah residents enter ইহরাম from Jeddah itself, as their home is between the miqat and মক্কা মুকাররমা. Travelers passing through Jeddah must enter ইহরাম at or before the miqat they pass. What Is the Ruling?

The ruling depends on whether the person is a Jeddah resident or a traveler. For Jeddah residents, Jeddah is their miqat — they enter ইহরাম from their home in Jeddah because Jeddah lies between the designated mawaqit (plural of miqat) and মক্কা মুকাররমা. নবী করীম stated that those who live between the mawaqit and মক্কা মুকাররমা enter ইহরাম from where they are, even from মক্কা মুকাররমা itself.

Sheikh Ibn Baz stated that Jeddah residents enter ইহরাম from their homes when they intend উমরাহ. They do not need to go to any other miqat. For travelers who fly into Jeddah, the ruling is different: they should have entered ইহরাম at or before crossing the miqat line. If a traveler arrives in Jeddah without having entered ইহরাম and has passed the miqat, they should return to the miqat to enter ইহরাম. If returning is not possible, they enter ইহরাম from Jeddah and owe a sacrifice (dam) for passing the miqat without ইহরাম.

Sheikh Ibn Uthaymeen advised travelers flying to Jeddah who intend উমরাহ to enter ইহরাম on the airplane when they are approximately above the miqat point. Flight crews on Saudi airlines typically announce when the plane is approaching the miqat. If a traveler misses this announcement and lands in Jeddah without ইহরাম, the majority of scholars require them to return to the miqat or pay the fidyah (sacrifice). This is why it is মুস্তাহাব to prepare for ইহরাম before boarding the flight.

নবী করীম (সাল্লাল্লাহু আলাইহি ওয়া সাল্লাম) designated Dhul Hulayfah as the miqat for the people of মদীনা মুনাওয়ারা, al-Juhfah for the people of Sham, Yalamlam for the people of Yemen, and Qarn al-Manazil for the people of Najd. He said: 'These are for their people and for anyone who passes through them intending হজ্জ or উমরাহ. And whoever lives within these boundaries enters ইহরাম from where they are, even the people of মক্কা মুকাররমা from মক্কা মুকাররমা.'

How Do Different Madhabs View This?

Scholars from different schools of Islamic jurisprudence offer varying perspectives on this matter.

Hanafi

Jeddah residents enter ইহরাম from Jeddah. Travelers who pass the miqat without ইহরাম must return or owe a dam. The Hanafi school emphasizes the obligation of not passing the miqat without ইহরাম.

Al-Hidayah: passing the miqat without ইহরাম requires a dam (sacrifice).

Maliki

Jeddah is the miqat for its residents. Travelers should enter ইহরাম at the miqat of their origin country or the one they pass.

Maliki scholars follow the hadith of Ibn Abbas on the designated mawaqit.

Shafi'i

Jeddah residents enter ইহরাম from Jeddah. Travelers who miss the miqat must return to it. If they enter ইহরাম from Jeddah, they owe a sacrifice.

Al-Majmu' by al-Nawawi: those who live between the mawaqit enter ইহরাম from their residence.

Hanbali

Jeddah is the miqat for its residents. Travelers must not pass their designated miqat without ইহরাম. If they do, they must return or pay a dam.

Al-Mughni by Ibn Qudamah: the mawaqit are ওয়াজিব; bypassing them incurs a penalty.
