What is the ruling if the জামারাত are stoned in the wrong sequence?

On the days of Tashriq (11th-13th), the three জামারাত must be stoned in order: smallest (al-Sughra), middle (al-Wusta), then largest (al-Kubra/al-Aqabah). On the days of Tashriq (11th, 12th, and 13th of Dhul-Hijjah), the three জামারাত must be stoned in a specific sequence: first the smallest Jamarah (al-Sughra/al-Ula), then the middle Jamarah (al-Wusta), then the largest Jamarah (al-Kubra/Jamrat al-Aqabah). On the 10th of Dhul-Hijjah, only Jamrat al-Aqabah is stoned, so the sequence issue does not arise.

The majority of scholars (Maliki, Shafi'i, Hanbali) hold that the correct sequence is ওয়াজিব (wajib) or even a condition (shart) for the validity of the stoning. If a হাজী stones them in the wrong order — for example, starting with the largest or middle Jamarah — they must repeat the stoning in the correct order. Sheikh Ibn Uthaymeen explained that নবী করীম (সাল্লাল্লাহু আলাইহি ওয়া সাল্লাম) stoned them in sequence and said 'Take your rites from me,' making his order binding.

The Hanafi school takes a more lenient position, holding that the sequence is Sunnah (মুস্তাহাব) but not a condition of validity. According to this view, stoning in the wrong order is valid but contrary to the Sunnah, and no penalty or repetition is required. However, the হাজী misses the reward of following the prophetic sequence. Sheikh Ibn Baz followed the majority position and advised that if a হাজী discovers they have stoned in the wrong order and the day's stoning time has not ended, they should repeat the stoning in the correct sequence from the point where the order was broken.

On the days of Tashriq, নবী করীম (সাল্লাল্লাহু আলাইহি ওয়া সাল্লাম) went to the জামারাত and stoned the first Jamarah with seven pebbles, saying 'Allahu Akbar' with each throw. Then he moved forward and made dua. Then he stoned the second Jamarah with seven pebbles, then moved forward and made dua. Then he stoned Jamrat al-Aqabah with seven pebbles and departed.

How Do Different Madhabs View This?

Scholars from different schools of Islamic jurisprudence offer varying perspectives on this matter.

Hanafi

The sequence of stoning is Sunnah, not ওয়াজিব. Stoning in the wrong order is valid but contrary to the মুস্তাহাব practice. No repetition is required.

Al-Hidayah: the sequence is from the Sunnah, and omitting it does not invalidate the stoning.

Maliki

The Maliki school considers the sequence ওয়াজিব. Stoning in the wrong order requires repeating from the point of error while the stoning time remains.

Al-Mudawwanah: Imam Malik required the correct sequence for stoning the three জামারাত.

Shafi'i

The sequence is a condition (shart) for the validity of stoning according to the Shafi'i school. Stoning in the wrong order must be repeated in the correct sequence.

Al-Majmu' by al-Nawawi: 'The sequence of the three জামারাত is required, and stoning out of order is not counted.'

Hanbali

The Hanbali school considers the sequence wajib (ওয়াজিব). Stoning in the wrong order requires correction by repeating from the point of error.

Al-Mughni by Ibn Qudamah: 'The sequence in stoning the জামারাত is ওয়াজিব, based on নবী করীম's consistent practice.'
