Women perform taqsir by trimming approximately a fingertip's length (about 2-3 centimeters) from the ends of their hair. Shaving the head (halq) is prohibited for women by scholarly consensus. The hair should be gathered and the ends cut evenly. This can be done privately by the woman herself or with a companion's help, and does not require a barber.
Taqsir (hair trimming) is an ওয়াজিব rite that marks the completion of উমরাহ and the partial or full release from ইহরাম during হজ্জ. For women, only taqsir is permitted — halq (complete head shaving) is prohibited by the consensus of scholars. নবী করীম (সাল্লাল্লাহু আলাইহি ওয়া সাল্লাম) said regarding women: 'There is no shaving for women; women should only trim' (Abu Dawud). The amount to be trimmed is approximately the length of a fingertip (anmulah), which translates to roughly 2 to 3 centimeters from the ends of the hair. The woman gathers all her hair together and cuts this amount from the ends. If her hair has multiple layers or significantly different lengths, she should trim from the ends of all the hair, not just the longest strands. The cutting should be done after completing sa'i (for উমরাহ) or after the stoning on the 10th Dhul Hijjah (for হজ্জ).
Women do not need to go to a barber for taqsir — in fact, it is more appropriate to do it privately. You can trim your own hair by gathering it in a ponytail, measuring a fingertip's length from the ends, and cutting with sharp scissors. If this is difficult, ask a female companion to assist. Some women bring small scissors in their travel kit specifically for this purpose. If you have very short hair, trim what you can from the ends — the obligation is to trim, and the length is relative to your hair. If you have extremely long hair, you still only need to cut a fingertip's length, not a significant portion. After the trimming, you are released from ইহরাম, and all ইহরাম restrictions are lifted. Dispose of the cut hair respectfully — it does not require any special treatment.
Several misconceptions circulate about women's hair cutting after হজ্জ. Some believe that cutting from only one strand or one spot is sufficient — this is incorrect জমহুর উলামাদের মতে, who require trimming from all or most of the hair. Some believe the hair must be cut by someone else — the woman may cut it herself. Some believe a specific dua must be recited during the cutting — there is no specific required dua, though saying 'Bismillah' is মুস্তাহাব as with any significant action. Some believe the cutting must be done immediately at the Haram — it can be done at the hotel or any private space, as long as it is done after completing the required rituals. The key is that the trimming signals the completion of the হজ্জ rites and the exit from ইহরাম, and it should be done before resuming normal activities that are prohibited during ইহরাম.
