What Does sa'i by Proxy Mean in Detail?

Islamic jurisprudence permits Haji by proxy (Haji al-Badal) for individuals who are permanently unable to perform Haji — due to old age, terminal illness, or death — and sa'i is included as part of that complete proxy ibadah haji. The proxy performs all rituals including sa'i with the intention (niyyah) for the person they represent. However, performing sa'i alone by proxy (separate from a complete Haji or Umrah) is not a standard practice in any of the four schools. A person who is temporarily ill during Haji but capable of sa'i at a later time should delay and perform it themselves when able. Those who cannot walk but are present may perform sa'i in a wheelchair or be carried, which is preferred over proxy.
