عرفات is clearly marked by boundary signs; the critical mistake to avoid is standing in the Valley of Uranah, which borders عرفات but is outside its boundaries and does not count.
The plain of عرفات is located approximately 20 km southeast of مکہ مکرمہ. It is a large, open area that is clearly demarcated by the Saudi authorities with prominent boundary signs in Arabic, English, and other languages. These signs are placed along roads and pathways entering the عرفات area, making it generally straightforward to identify whether you are within the boundaries.
The most critical boundary to be aware of is the Valley of Uranah, which lies on the western edge of عرفات closer to مکہ مکرمہ. The valley looks similar to the rest of the عرفات plain, and some حجاج mistakenly stand there thinking they are in عرفات. Standing in Uranah does NOT count as standing in عرفات, and a حاجی who spends the entire Wuquf time in Uranah has missed the pillar of حج. نبی کریم (صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم) specifically warned: 'All of عرفات is a standing place, except the Valley of Uranah.'
Masjid al-Namirah, where the حج sermon is delivered, straddles the عرفات-Uranah boundary. The front part of the مسجد (including where the imam stands for the sermon) is technically in Uranah, while the back portion extends into عرفات. After the sermon and combined Dhuhr-Asr نماز, حجاج should move to the back of the مسجد or outside into the عرفات plain to ensure they are within bounds. The Mount of Mercy (Jabal al-Rahmah) is within عرفات. Use GPS-enabled apps like احرامOS to verify your position relative to the boundaries.
