حج Tamattu is the most مستحب type: perform a complete عمرہ first upon arrival, exit احرام, enjoy normal life, then enter احرام again for حج on the 8th of Dhul Hijjah. The sequence: arrive at miqat, احرام for عمرہ, طواف + sa'i + halq, exit احرام, free period, احرام for حج on 8th, then all حج rituals. A sacrifice (hady) is required.
At or before the miqat, enter احرام with the intention for عمرہ: 'Labbayk Allahumma Umratan.' This is the key distinction of Tamattu — you enter for عمرہ first, NOT حج. Begin the تلبیہ and proceed to مکہ مکرمہ.
Perform a complete عمرہ: stop تلبیہ upon reaching the Haram, perform طواف (7 circuits with idtiba and raml for men), pray 2 rak'at, drink زمزم, perform سعی (7 laps), then halq or taqsir. After hair cutting, you exit احرام completely.
These are the most frequent errors pilgrims make during this stage of Hajj.
Scholarly references supporting this guidance from established Islamic sources.
Between عمرہ and the 8th of Dhul Hijjah, you are free from احرام. Wear normal clothing, use perfume, live normally. Use this time for worship at the Haram, voluntary طواف, قرآن, and دعا.
On the morning of the 8th of Dhul Hijjah, perform غسل and enter احرام from your accommodation with the intention for حج: 'Labbayk Allahumma Hajjan.' Begin the تلبیہ. Then proceed to منیٰ.
Follow the standard حج sequence: منیٰ (8th), عرفات (9th), مزدلفہ, stoning + sacrifice + shaving on 10th, طواف al-Ifadah + سعی (separate from عمرہ سعی), and stoning on 11th-13th. Because you are performing Tamattu, you MUST offer a sacrifice (hady).
Before leaving مکہ مکرمہ, perform طواف al-Wida as the final act of your حج. Your combined حج Tamattu journey is complete — you have performed a full عمرہ and a full حج.
