The Shahada is the gateway to Islam — sincerely uttering it with understanding and conviction makes a person Muslim. It consists of two parts: 'La ilaha illa Allah' (there is no god but Allah) — affirming monotheism (tawhid) and negating all false deities, and 'Muhammadun rasul Allah' (Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah) — affirming the prophethood and following the Sunnah. Scholars outline seven conditions for a valid Shahada: knowledge, certainty, acceptance, compliance, truthfulness, sincerity, and love. The Shahada is recited in the adhan (call to shalat), during salah (in the tashahhud), at birth (whispered in a newborn's ear), and ideally as a person's last words before death. During Haji, the Shahada is embedded throughout — in the talbiyah, in shalat, and in the profound monotheistic experience of standing at Arafah with millions declaring the oneness of Allah.
