| Arabic | يَوْم التَّرْوِيَة |
|---|---|
| Pronunciation | YAWM at-tar-WEE-yah |
| Etymology | Tarwiyah (تروية) derives from the root ر-و-ي (r-w-y), meaning 'to quench thirst' or 'to water.' Historically, jamaah haji would fill their water containers on this day in preparation for the days ahead in the desert. Some scholars suggest it means 'deliberation,' as Ibrahim deliberated about his dream of sacrificing Ismail on this day. |
Yawm al-Tarwiyah(يَوْم التَّرْوِيَة) Yawm al-Tarwiyah is the 8th of Dzulhijjah, marking the beginning of the main Haji rites. Pilgrims enter Ihram for Haji and travel to Mina where they spend the night in preparation for the Day of Arafah.
يَوْم التَّرْوِيَة
On Yawm al-Tarwiyah, jamaah haji performing Haji Tamattu who had exited Ihram after their Umrah now re-enter Ihram for Haji from their accommodations in Mekkah. Those performing Haji Ifrad or Qiran are already in Ihram. After praying Fajr, jamaah haji depart for Mina, the tent city located approximately 5 kilometers east of Mekkah. In Mina, jamaah haji pray the five daily shalat, shortening the four-rak'ah shalat (Dhuhr, Asr, and Isha) to two rak'ahs each but performing each shalat at its proper time without combining. The night is spent in worship, reflection, and preparation for the most important day of Haji — the standing at Arafah. This is a day of spiritual preparation, and jamaah haji are encouraged to occupy themselves with Talbiyah, dhikr, and doa. The stay at Mina on this day is considered Sunnah, not Wajib, menurut jumhur ulama.
