## Understanding Makkah's Desert Climate
Makkah sits in a narrow valley surrounded by the Hejaz mountains in western Saudi Arabia, at an elevation of approximately 277 meters above sea level. Its climate is classified as hot desert (BWh in the Koppen system), characterized by extreme heat, low humidity, minimal rainfall, and intense solar radiation. The city's valley location can trap heat, making temperatures feel even higher than surrounding areas. Understanding these conditions month by month is essential for planning your pilgrimage, choosing appropriate clothing, and preparing your body for the environment you will encounter.
## January and February: The Mildest Months
January is Makkah's coolest month with average highs of 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit) and lows of 19 degrees Celsius (66 degrees Fahrenheit). February is similar with slightly warming temperatures. These months are among the most comfortable for Umrah pilgrims, though it is important to note that 'cool' is relative — 30 degrees Celsius is still warm by most international standards. Occasional rainfall occurs during these months, sometimes heavy enough to cause flash flooding in the low-lying areas of the Haram and surrounding streets. Pack a light jacket or sweater for the cooler evenings and aggressively air-conditioned indoor spaces.
## March and April: Spring Warming
Temperatures begin climbing in March, with average highs reaching 34 degrees Celsius (93 degrees Fahrenheit) and continuing to rise through April when highs average 38 degrees Celsius (100 degrees Fahrenheit). These months represent a good balance between manageable heat and relatively lower pilgrim volumes (outside of Ramadan). Wind can be a factor, occasionally bringing dust and sand that reduces visibility and causes respiratory discomfort. Hydration becomes increasingly important as the mercury rises, and sunscreen should be applied consistently during outdoor rituals.
## May and June: The Heat Intensifies
May marks the beginning of the extreme heat season, with average highs of 42 degrees Celsius (108 degrees Fahrenheit) and little respite even after sunset, with nighttime lows remaining around 29 degrees Celsius (84 degrees Fahrenheit). June is similar, pushing toward 43-44 degrees Celsius. Hajj 2026 is expected to fall in late May, placing pilgrims squarely in this scorching period. The combination of extreme heat and the physical demands of Hajj creates serious health risks. Heat acclimatization training before departure is strongly recommended. Carry water at all times, use umbrellas for shade, and plan activities around the hottest hours when possible.
## July and August: Peak Summer
July and August are Makkah's hottest months, with average highs of 43-44 degrees Celsius (109-111 degrees Fahrenheit) and recorded extremes above 48 degrees Celsius (118 degrees Fahrenheit). Ground surface temperatures on asphalt and marble can exceed 70 degrees Celsius. These months are challenging for Umrah pilgrims but coincide with school holidays in many countries, bringing significant crowds. If performing Umrah during peak summer, plan outdoor activities for early morning or late evening, stay in air-conditioned spaces during midday hours, and take heat precautions extremely seriously. The Saudi authorities deploy additional cooling measures during these months.
## September and October: Autumn Transition
September remains hot with average highs of 43 degrees Celsius, but October begins showing relief as temperatures drop to an average high of 38 degrees Celsius (100 degrees Fahrenheit). These months occasionally see rainfall, which can bring brief but welcome cooling. Pilgrim volumes are moderate, making these months attractive for Umrah visitors seeking a balance between bearable weather and manageable crowds. Humidity can increase during these transitional months, particularly if rain occurs, which can make the heat feel more oppressive despite the lower thermometer readings.
## November and December: Approaching Winter
November brings significant relief with average highs of 33 degrees Celsius (91 degrees Fahrenheit) and pleasant evenings around 22 degrees Celsius (72 degrees Fahrenheit). December is one of the most comfortable months for pilgrimage, with highs of 31 degrees Celsius (88 degrees Fahrenheit). These months are popular for Umrah, and the Haram can be quite crowded, especially during school holidays and around the Mawlid period. The comfortable temperatures make long walking and outdoor rituals significantly more manageable, and the risk of heat-related illness drops substantially. However, the pleasant weather brings higher demand and potentially higher prices for flights and accommodation.
## Planning Around the Weather
For Hajj, you have no choice — the dates are fixed by the Islamic calendar. But for Umrah, weather can and should be a factor in your planning. The optimal weather months are November through February, offering the most comfortable conditions for the physical demands of Tawaf and Sa'i. However, these months coincide with peak Umrah season, meaning larger crowds and higher prices. The shoulder months of March-April and October-November offer a compromise. Whatever month you visit, pack and prepare for the specific conditions: sun protection and extreme hydration supplies for summer months, and a light jacket for winter evenings.
