Many nationalities can obtain a Saudi tourist e-visa online (visa.visitsaudi.com) that permits Umrah; others apply through licensed agents with passport, photos, vaccination certificate, and insurance.
Saudi Arabia has dramatically modernized its visa system in recent years. For citizens of eligible countries (including the US, UK, EU, Canada, Australia, and many others), the simplest route is the Saudi tourist e-visa, which explicitly permits Umrah. Apply online at visa.visitsaudi.com — the process takes minutes and the visa is usually approved within 24-48 hours. This electronic visa is valid for one year with multiple entries and allows stays of up to 90 days.
For nationals of countries not eligible for the e-visa, the traditional Umrah visa route through licensed agents and travel operators remains available. This process involves: submitting your passport (with at least 6 months validity), completed application forms, passport-sized photographs, meningitis ACWY vaccination certificate, proof of health insurance, and in some cases, proof of accommodation booking in Saudi Arabia. Processing takes 3-7 business days through an authorized agent.
Key recent changes: women can now apply independently without a mahram. The previous restriction on performing Umrah only through licensed packages has been relaxed for tourist visa holders, who can arrange their own travel, accommodation, and perform Umrah independently. Saudi citizens and GCC nationals do not need a visa. Check your country's specific requirements, as they can differ — some nationalities require embassy visits while others have fully online processes. During Ramadan and Hajj season, some additional permits or registration through the Nusuk app may be required to enter the Haram.
