| Pronunciation | SUN-nah GHAYR mu-AK-ka-dah |
| Etymology | From Arabic سنة (sunnah, 'established practice'), غير (ghayr, 'not/other than'), and مؤكدة (muakkadah, 'confirmed'). The prefix ghayr negates the emphasis. |
Sunnah Ghair Muakkadah(سنة غير مؤكدة) A non-emphasized or non-confirmed practice of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) that he performed sometimes and left at other times. There is no blame for omitting it, and performing it earns reward.
سنة غير مؤكدة
Sunnah Ghair Muakkadah represents the lightest category of recommended actions in Islamic law. These are acts the Prophet performed occasionally but was not consistent in performing, indicating they are desirable but not strongly emphasized. The distinction between Sunnah Muakkadah and Ghair Muakkadah is important in fiqh because it affects how strongly an act is recommended. Examples include: four rakaat before Asr prayer, four rakaat before Isha, and some additional voluntary prayers. A person who performs these acts earns reward from Allah, but one who omits them entirely is not blameworthy. In Hajj context, certain additional acts of worship at the holy sites fall into this category — they enhance the pilgrim's experience but are not required for a valid pilgrimage.
From Arabic سنة (sunnah, 'established practice'), غير (ghayr, 'not/other than'), and مؤكدة (muakkadah, 'confirmed'). The prefix ghayr negates the emphasis.
