Hajj Tamattu is the most recommended type: perform a complete Umrah first upon arrival, exit ihram, enjoy normal life, then enter ihram again for Hajj on the 8th of Dhul Hijjah. The sequence: arrive at miqat, ihram for Umrah, tawaf + sa'i + halq, exit ihram, free period, ihram for Hajj on 8th, then all Hajj rituals. A sacrifice (hady) is required.
At or before the miqat, enter ihram with the intention for Umrah: 'Labbayk Allahumma Umratan.' This is the key distinction of Tamattu — you enter for Umrah first, NOT Hajj. Begin the Talbiyah and proceed to Makkah.
Perform a complete Umrah: stop Talbiyah upon reaching the Haram, perform tawaf (7 circuits with idtiba and raml for men), pray 2 rak'at, drink Zamzam, perform Sa'i (7 laps), then halq or taqsir. After hair cutting, you exit ihram completely.
These are the most frequent errors pilgrims make during this stage of Hajj.
Scholarly references supporting this guidance from established Islamic sources.
Between Umrah and the 8th of Dhul Hijjah, you are free from ihram. Wear normal clothing, use perfume, live normally. Use this time for worship at the Haram, voluntary tawaf, Quran, and dua.
On the morning of the 8th of Dhul Hijjah, perform ghusl and enter ihram from your accommodation with the intention for Hajj: 'Labbayk Allahumma Hajjan.' Begin the Talbiyah. Then proceed to Mina.
Follow the standard Hajj sequence: Mina (8th), Arafat (9th), Muzdalifah, stoning + sacrifice + shaving on 10th, Tawaf al-Ifadah + Sa'i (separate from Umrah Sa'i), and stoning on 11th-13th. Because you are performing Tamattu, you MUST offer a sacrifice (hady).
Before leaving Makkah, perform Tawaf al-Wida as the final act of your Hajj. Your combined Hajj Tamattu journey is complete — you have performed a full Umrah and a full Hajj.
