Raml is the brisk walking with short steps during the first three circuits of Tawaf al-Qudum (arrival tawaf). It is a confirmed sunnah for men only and is not prescribed for women. The evidence is the hadith of Ibn Umar: 'The Prophet (peace be upon him) performed raml from the Black Stone to the Black Stone in three circuits and walked in four' (Sahih al-Bukhari 1603, Sahih Muslim 1261). Sheikh Ibn Uthaymeen stated: 'Raml is sunnah in the first three circuits of Tawaf al-Qudum only. It is not prescribed in Tawaf al-Ifadah or Tawaf al-Wida.' Sheikh Ibn Baz stated: 'If unable to perform raml due to crowding, the pilgrim is excused and should walk normally' (Fatawa Ibn Baz, vol. 16). Additionally, idtiba' (exposing the right shoulder) is done throughout all seven circuits of the same tawaf where raml is prescribed.
