Dehydration is the single most common medical issue for pilgrims, and women may be at increased risk due to reluctance to drink frequently when restroom access is uncertain. Make hydration a deliberate priority — drink at least 4 liters of water daily, more during hot weather or intensive walking. Carry a refillable water bottle at all times and refill from Zamzam dispensers. Add electrolyte powder to at least one bottle daily to replace minerals lost through sweating. Learn the early signs of heat exhaustion: headache, dizziness, nausea, excessive sweating, and rapid pulse. If you experience these symptoms, immediately move to shade or air conditioning, drink cool water, and rest. Heatstroke (confusion, stopping sweating, very high body temperature) is a medical emergency — seek immediate help at the nearest Haram medical clinic.

Bring ample menstrual supplies from home, as your preferred products may not be available in Saudi Arabia. The stress and physical demands of Hajj can disrupt menstrual cycles, causing early, late, or heavier periods. Pack for this unpredictability. Urinary tract infections are common during Hajj due to dehydration, infrequent urination (avoiding crowded restrooms), heat, and reduced hygiene access. Prevention strategies include drinking plenty of water, urinating when needed rather than holding, wiping front to back, and carrying antibacterial wipes for use when water is unavailable for istinja. If you develop UTI symptoms (burning, frequency, urgency), begin treatment early — carry a course of UTI antibiotics prescribed by your doctor before departure. Yeast infections can also occur due to the heat, sweating, and extended wear of tight clothing. Pack antifungal cream and wear breathable cotton underwear.

The combination of intense sun, heat, sweating, and dust can challenge skin health during pilgrimage. Apply SPF 50+ sunscreen to exposed areas (face, hands, neck) daily, reapplying every 2 hours during outdoor exposure. Lip balm with SPF prevents painful cracked lips. Moisturize skin nightly to counter the drying effects of ablution water and dry climate. Chafing is a common problem from long days of walking in heat — apply anti-chafing cream or petroleum jelly to thighs, underarms, and any friction-prone areas before each day's activities. Foot care is critical — pilgrims walk an average of 10 to 15 kilometers daily during Hajj. Wear well-broken-in, comfortable shoes with good arch support. Apply blister prevention tape to hot spots before blisters form. At night, wash and dry feet thoroughly, apply moisturizer, and elevate legs to reduce swelling.

The emotional intensity of Hajj can be overwhelming, and women should be prepared for the psychological demands alongside the physical ones. It is normal to experience a range of intense emotions — spiritual elation, tearful release, frustration with crowds, exhaustion-driven irritability, and homesickness. These are all part of the pilgrimage experience. Give yourself permission to feel whatever arises without judgment. Rest is not laziness — adequate sleep is essential for both physical health and emotional resilience. If you feel overwhelmed, take a break from the crowds, find a quiet spot in the mosque or your hotel, and simply breathe and make dhikr. Connect with fellow women in your group — sharing experiences and mutual support is invaluable. If you have a history of anxiety, depression, or other mental health conditions, consult your doctor about managing these during the stress of pilgrimage, and ensure you bring adequate medication.
