For the intense heat of Makkah's summer (when Hajj 2026 falls), lightweight cotton with a loose weave allows maximum air circulation. Avoid synthetic fabrics like polyester or nylon, which trap heat and moisture and become uncomfortable during extended wear. If synthetics are necessary, choose modern moisture-wicking athletic fabrics designed for heat. A breathable cotton headscarf is more comfortable than a heavy or lined one. Consider bringing multiple sets of ihram clothing — the ability to change into fresh garments between worship sessions is a significant comfort, especially when sweating heavily.
A practical women's ihram outfit consists of several layers that can be adjusted for comfort and situation. The base layer should be comfortable, modest undergarments in breathable cotton or moisture-wicking fabric. The middle layer can be a loose-fitting, long tunic or dress (jalabiyyah) that reaches below the knees or to the ankles. The outer layer is typically a lightweight abaya or large shawl that provides full coverage. For the head covering, a comfortable cotton hijab or large khimar that stays securely in place without constant adjustment is essential — pin it well, as you will be walking for hours and do not want to fuss with it. Socks are recommended for walking on the hot marble floors around the Haram. Choose comfortable, low-friction socks that will not cause blisters. Some women prefer to wear a loose-fitting two-piece outfit (long tunic and wide-leg pants) under their abaya for the practicality of using restrooms and performing wudu.
Unlike men who must wear white ihram garments, women may wear any color for ihram. White is popular as it reflects heat, evokes purity, and matches the sea of white-clad pilgrims. Black is commonly worn by Gulf Arab women and provides a slimming, uniform appearance. Dark navy, brown, and olive green are practical choices that hide stains and dirt from the dusty Hajj environment. Bright colors and heavily decorated or embellished fabrics, while not prohibited, are generally avoided to maintain a spirit of humility and simplicity. The key requirement is modesty — clothing must be loose enough not to reveal body contours, thick enough not to be transparent, and long enough to cover the body properly. Avoid tight jeans, fitted clothing, or short garments even if worn under an abaya, as the abaya may shift during tawaf and sa'i.
