| Etymology | আরাফাত (عرفة/عرفات) has multiple proposed etymologies from the root ع-ر-ف (a-r-f): 'recognition,' as it is where Adam and Hawa (Eve) recognized each other after descending to earth; 'knowledge,' as Jibreel taught Ibrahim the হজ্জ rites there; or 'acknowledgment,' as হাজীগণ acknowledge their sins and seek forgiveness. |
Yawm আরাফাত(يَوْم عَرَفَة) Yawm আরাফাত is the 9th of Dhul Hijjah, the pinnacle of হজ্জ. Pilgrims perform Wuquf (standing) at the plain of আরাফাত from noon to sunset, engaging in intense দোয়া, repentance, and devotion.
يَوْم عَرَفَة
Yawm আরাফাত is considered the greatest day in the Islamic calendar. নবী করীম Muhammad (সাল্লাল্লাহু আলাইহি ওয়া সাল্লাম) declared, 'হজ্জ is আরাফাত' (Al-Hakim), meaning that presence at আরাফাত is the essential pillar without which হজ্জ is invalid. After Fajr in মিনা, হাজীগণ proceed to the vast plain of আরাফাত, approximately 20 kilometers east of মক্কা মুকাররমা. At noon, the imam delivers a sermon (khutbah) at Masjid Namirah, and হাজীগণ combine and shorten Dhuhr and Asr সালাতs. From then until sunset, হাজীগণ engage in Wuquf — standing in earnest দোয়া, seeking forgiveness, and making dua. নবী করীম said no day sees more souls freed from Hellfire than the Day of আরাফাত. For non-হাজীগণ, fasting on this day expiates the sins of the previous and coming year. After sunset, হাজীগণ depart for মুযদালিফা without praying Maghrib at আরাফাত, combining it with Isha at মুযদালিফা.
