Sa'i by Proxy(السعي بالنيابة) The performance of Sa'i on behalf of another person who is unable to perform it themselves due to permanent physical incapacity, severe illness, or death. This is part of the broader framework of Hajj al-Badal (proxy pilgrimage).
السعي بالنيابة
Islamic jurisprudence permits Hajj by proxy (Hajj al-Badal) for individuals who are permanently unable to perform Hajj — due to old age, terminal illness, or death — and Sa'i is included as part of that complete proxy pilgrimage. The proxy performs all rituals including Sa'i with the intention (niyyah) for the person they represent. However, performing Sa'i alone by proxy (separate from a complete Hajj or Umrah) is not a standard practice in any of the four schools. A person who is temporarily ill during Hajj but capable of Sa'i at a later time should delay and perform it themselves when able. Those who cannot walk but are present may perform Sa'i in a wheelchair or be carried, which is preferred over proxy.
