حج Tamattu(حَجّ التَّمَتُّع) حج Tamattu (enjoyment حج) is a type of حج where the حاجی performs عمرہ first, exits احرام, then enters احرام again for حج during the same trip. It requires a thanksgiving sacrifice (Hady).
حَجّ التَّمَتُّع
حج Tamattu is the most common type of حج performed today and is considered the easiest for حجاج. The process begins when the حاجی enters احرام at the Miqat with the intention of عمرہ during the حج months (Shawwal, Dhul Qa'dah, or Dhul Hijjah). They perform عمرہ (طواف, سعی, and Halq/Taqsir), then fully exit the state of احرام, returning to normal life — wearing regular clothes, using perfume, and engaging in all permissible activities. This period of normalcy is the 'enjoyment' (Tamattu) that gives this type its name. On the 8th of Dhul Hijjah (Yawm al-Tarwiyah), the حاجی re-enters احرام for حج from their accommodation in مکہ مکرمہ and proceeds with all the حج rites. Because the حاجی benefits from performing both عمرہ and حج in a single journey (saving the effort of a separate trip for عمرہ), a Hady sacrifice is required as a thanksgiving to Allah. If they cannot afford the sacrifice, they fast three days during حج and seven days after returning home. نبی کریم مستحب Tamattu to his companions, saying, 'Had I known what I know now, I would not have brought a sacrificial animal and would have made it عمرہ.'
